Mrinalini Mukherjee’s parents were both artists and she spent part of her childhood at Santiniketan, the educational institute in rural West Bengal started by Rabindranath Tagore. In art school, she majored in mural painting, but a chance encounter with local craftsmen ignited her interest in using jute and hemp fibers to create what began as wall-hangings and developed, over the course of thirty years, into elaborate sculptures. Subsequently, she also worked in ceramics and bronze and career retrospectives have been mounted at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi (2015) and the Met Breuer in New York (2019).
