Aditya Pande: “Saturday”
For his third solo show with Nature Morte, Aditya Pande has chosen the title of “Saturday” Perhaps because, like his works, Saturday is not one thing or another? A day of leisure (for most) that often becomes hectic due to errands and socializing? The artist says he likes the references to the ancient Roman god Saturn, who was associated with wealth.
Starting with computer-generated drawings, the artist then works on to the large-scale print-outs by hand, confusing the issue. Part painting, part collage, and part photograph, his works defy conventional terminology. The works are both playful and childish while also frightening and grotesque. They are steeped in culture yet almost animalistic. They are orchestrated yet spontaneous, reveling in linguistic structures which turn out to be pure gibberish. Pande’s works are consciously confusing, kaleidoscopes of subjects and sensations for the viewer to become lost within.
Aditya Pande was born in Lucknow in 1976 and lives and works in New Delhi. He received a degree in Graphic Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, in 2001. Pande's process involves both the manipulation of computer-aided technologies as also more traditional media. As such, an individual work may draw on the use of media as diverse as vector drawing, digital photography, ink, tinsel and acrylic paint. Dense layering of the picture plane marks the artist’s process; this often extends right onto the acrylic covering the artwork.
Solo shows of his work have been held at Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai; Aicon Gallery, New York, and Nature Morte at the Oberoi Gurgaon. His works have also been the centerpieces for a number of groups shows at Nature Morte in New Delhi, including “Panoplism” in 2013 and “ad infinitum” in 2010. He has been included in group exhibitions at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Noida, Nature Morte in Berlin, Otto Zoo in Milan, and Bose Pacia in New York, among many others.
Nature Morte is located at A1 Neeti Bagh, on the main Khel Gaon Marg, between Siri Fort Auditorium and Ansal Plaza. The gallery is open every day but Sunday, from 10am to 6pm, and by appointment.
