Mark Prime Norwich, United Kingdom, b.1963
Mark Prime (born 1963, UK; lives and works in Mumbai, India) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans installation, sculpture, photography, and painting. Known for his refined use of light, geometry, and rhythm, Prime creates spatial compositions that are minimalist yet immersive, often drawing on his background as a musician. His works investigate the poetics of repetition, structure, and perceptual shifts, activating environments that are simultaneously precise and contemplative.
After relocating to Mumbai in the early 2000s, Prime founded Mark Prime Contemporary Art Projects Pvt Ltd in Mumbai, an exhibition design studio, while continuing to develop his own artistic practice. Prime’s work reveals a strong conceptual and formal lineage with the traditions of light art, Constructivism, Fluxus, and sound-based minimalism. His early years in the UK, spent navigating his father’s engineering factory, embedded in him a natural familiarity with machines and industrial materials.
He held his first solo show with Nature Morte in its Berlin gallery in 2013 and had a solo show in the Mumbai gallery in November 2024. He has also had solo exhibitions at Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai (2016, 2020); Vis-a-Vis, New Delhi (2018); and VHC Gallery, Pune (2023). Notable group presentations include the second edition of the Sculpture Park, Madhavendra Palace, Nahargarh Fort and ‘When is Space’ at Jawahar Kala Kendra, both in Jaipur in 2018; ‘In-Dialogue: Tradition and Transformation’ at the Jaipur Center for Art and Kochi Muziris Biennale, both in 2025.
